A provider adapter reduces code changes, but it does not make models interchangeable. Before switching, compare tool behavior, output formats, source support, latency, and total cost on the same task set. Keep a tested rollback path.
Separate Provider Interfaces From Business Logic
Isolate authentication, message formats, tool schemas, and response parsing behind explicit interfaces. Keep task requirements and acceptance tests independent of a particular provider.
List the Differences an Adapter Cannot Remove
Compare permitted data handling, tool behavior, output structure, limits, latency, and failure modes. Document provider-specific dependencies rather than describing the application as universally portable.
Portability has degrees. An application may switch between providers for simple drafting while remaining dependent on one provider for a particular tool behavior or data-handling requirement. Document those differences by task rather than making a single claim about the entire product. If a required function is unavailable during an outage, a limited read-only response or a clear service interruption may be preferable to an untested fallback. The goal is an explicit operating choice that preserves the task’s required boundaries, even when full functionality cannot continue.
Test a Replacement on the Same Work
Use the same representative tasks and quality standard for both models. Calculate total completed-task cost, including retries and human review.
Example: A replacement model follows the JSON schema but chooses a different tool argument. Treat that as a behavior change to assess, not a successful migration merely because parsing works.
Plan Migration and Rollback
Monitor provider lifecycle notices and set an internal migration owner and deadline. Promote a tested configuration gradually and keep a viable recovery option; a retired model may no longer be available for rollback.
